The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef recounts how the early Romans were skilled in the use of many spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as bay, fennel and dill. During the following few hundred years, the families of Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the advent of the 20th century, cookbooks were starting to become popular due to more people being able to read, people having more free time and having more money. |
